The Catholic University of America

In 2006, the Knights of Columbus announced an $8 million grant to Catholic University for the renovation of Keane Hall, a 35,000-square-foot building on CUA’s central mall. The donation – the largest the Knights has ever made to the university – will be used to renovate the building for the new home for the North American campus of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. The building will be renamed McGivney Hall in honor of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights.

The Knights funded a chair of American History at the Catholic University in 1904. The Columbiad magazine reported on the presentation of the $50,000 to James Cardinal Gibbons, Chancellor of the University.

In 1914, a $500,000 endowment was established at the University by the Knights with interest to provide K of C Fellowships to the University, and surplus used for general expenses. The February 1914 issue of The Columbiad featured an editorial by the rector of the University, Msgr. Thomas J. Shahan.

After the World War I, the Knights created Columbus University in Washington, D.C., to encourage part-time and evening professional education for returning veterans and others who could not afford full-time study. In 1954 this school merged with Catholic University. In 1965 the Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarship Fund was created with a capitalization of $500,000. These files (1899-present) document the involvement of the Order with Catholic University.
