 At their convention in 1922, the Knights of Columbus, in response to a plea by Newark’s Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh, passed a resolution to seriously consider the possibility of a junior class of affiliated membership.
A junior organization was established, known as the Columbian Squires, with Christian Brother Barnabas McDonald in charge of the program. The Knights also established a program in Boy Guidance at the University of Notre Dame, as well as a 30-hour course to train local leaders for the Squires.
These files trace the history of the Columbian Squires from 1922 to the present. The collection includes this October 6, 1926 letter from Brother Barnabas, and this 1927 booklet outlining the Boys’ Work programs.
