A Vatican Christmas: Creches of Pope John Paul II

Anno Domini MMV, Christmas 2005. Originally designed for St. Peter’s Square, but installed in Loreto, Italy. Figures by Francesco Narracci.

November 1, 2006 – February 28, 2007
The Vatican and Archdiocese of Cracow

The second in a series of Christmas in Miniature exhibitions featured unique and splendid crèches, a tradition close to the heart of Pope John Paul II. Beginning in 1982, he transformed St. Peter’s Square each Christmas with the installation of magnificent larger-than-life crèches, a devotion to the Nativity that originated from his youth in Poland. Twenty-three beautifully detailed scenes were model designs for the towering originals. Included in the exhibit were some models from the Vatican Palaces, from Pope John Paul II’s private collection.
